UNZIPPING
Cape Town (South Africa)
Eske Touborg's mural Unzipping, located at Makers Landing in Cape Town, is a visually powerful representation of humanity’s interaction with nature, specifically addressing the pressing issue of groundwater conservation in the context of climate change. The mural is spanning an impressive 198 square meters and features a human hand gently pulling a zipper that opens the land beneath Table Mountain to reveal the precious water below. This metaphor speaks to the delicate balance required in managing Earth's natural resources, particularly water, as it becomes scarcer.
The mural was part of a collaborative public art project, initiated by the Danish Embassy in partnership with various organizations, including WWF and the City of Cape Town. Funded by various stakeholders, including A.P. Møller Maersk and the V&A Waterfront, the mural is part of a larger initiative to raise awareness about climate change and water scarcity, inspired by the 2022 UN World Water Day theme Making the Invisible Visible. The public art project highlights Denmark’s long-standing partnership with South Africa in sustainable water management and underlines that even though groundwater is hidden, it plays a critical role and should be treated with care.
By blending Danish expertise in water resource management with Cape Town’s unique environmental challenges, Unzipping symbolizes a shared commitment to addressing climate change and safeguarding water for future generations. Touborg’s work invites viewers to reflect on their own responsibility in preserving this invaluable resource. Whether the hand in the mural is closing or opening the zipper is left for the viewer to interpret, mirroring the uncertain future we face in managing the earth’s natural water supply.
