PROCESS ROOM
Smukfest 2026 (Denmark)creativity as an ongoing process rather than a pursuit of a predetermined final result.
Situated as part of an art route across three rooms floating on the water, the project invited visitors to leave behind the noise of the festival and enter a space dedicated to reflection, experimentation and creation.
Rather than presenting finished artworks, the project placed the creative process itself at the centre. Prior to the installation both the musician Bannister and Touborg spent an hour inside the mirrored room creating respectively music and paintings. Both processes were filmed, documenting the artists as they worked through ideas, decisions and impulses in real time.
The recordings were presented on two larges screens that floated along the route, accompanied by the sound from the creative process. Instead of encountering a completed composition or painting, visitors encountered the moments that normally remain hidden: experimentation, hesitation, repetition and transformation.
At the centre of the installation the mirrored room of the experimentation could be found. The mirrors confronted visitors with their own reflection while simultaneously creating an environment that continuously shifted between what was real, reflected and created. The room became both a physical space and a metaphor for the inward process of making. A place where the artist and the viewer are confronted with themselves.
PROCESS ROOM is an investigation into what happens when the process becomes the final work. By removing the expectation of a finished result, the installation creates space for spontaneity and uncertainty, while the mirrors introduce another layer of reflection: a confrontation with the self as both creator and observer.
